Head of Sustainability: Louis Wright
Louis is the Head of Sustainability for the University’s Sustainability Team and current Chair of the Sustainable Facilities & Procurement Working Group. Louis is tasked with leading the implementation of Roehampton’s Sustainability Strategy, through close coordination between his team, the Environmental Sustainability Committee and the staff and student community.
Louis is focusing on several priorities at Roehampton:
- Developing an ambitious but realistic decarbonisation plan, to help the university invest in reducing it’s carbon footprint and establish a net zero date;
- Implementing an overarching sustainability strategy, with collaborative staff and student working groups, to ensure that sustainability is embedded within decision making at the university, and;
- Bringing sustainability as a topic of conversation for the university community and it’s peers.
Louis switched to a career in sustainability in 2018, looking to contribute to addressing climate change. Since then, he has worked on several programmes of work, including energy saving retrofits for buildings, fossil fuel phaseouts for heating systems, education and training programmes for college staff and students, biodiversity mapping and carbon footprint measuring and reduction strategy.
Outside of Roehampton, Louis is also an Associate of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and an active member of the Institute’s London & Southeast Regional Steering Group, contributing to networking and educational events for sustainability professionals.

Energy Manager: Manon Ray
Manon is a qualified engineer from Polytech’Savoie in France. She holds a Master’s Degree in Energy efficiency for buildings and Renewable energy technologies and has over 15 years’ experience in energy management. She has worked for a few engineering consultancies before joining the University of Roehampton in 2010 as Energy Manager.
Armed with a good knowledge base, analytical skills, a strong interest for energy and water efficient technologies, and a certain enthusiasm for low-energy buildings retrofit, the most important aspect of her role is to drive the identification, development and delivery of valuable energy/water saving projects. She enjoys making a quantifiable difference in reducing an organisation utilities usage, costs and carbon emissions.
As Energy Manager at UoR she works with a range of external and internal stakeholders and has been instrumental in the delivery of over 60 projects achieving a reduction of £1M per year in current utilities costs. These projects save every single year the equivalent of powering and heating 313 UK homes.
She manages utilities at many levels for University of Roehampton:
- Energy & Water Efficiency Projects Identification / Development / Management / Monitoring
- External and Internal Capital Funding bids for invest-to-save Projects
- Utilities Carbon Reduction Strategy
- Utilities Automatic Monitoring implementation and Metering Maintenance/Replacement
- Utilities Procurement – lead the Energy Risk Management Committee (ERMC) and continually review the energy broker performance
- Utilities Budgeting/Forecasting – responsible for over £3M p.a. utilities expenditure in 24/25
- Utilities Carbon Compliance
- Utilities Software implementation and maintenance
- Utilities Usage/Costs/Carbon Data Reporting
- Energy Efficiency Advising – input into new builds/large retrofits specifications
- Utilities Suppliers/Metering providers billing issues and communications
- Creating or keeping up-to-date essential Estates Assets Lists and Utilities Maps
- Gas and water leaks identification; etc.
In 2011 she wrote the University’s first Carbon Management Plan, setting a very ambitious 40% carbon reduction target for the next decade. We were pleased to announce that this demanding target was reached in 2022 – despite a 31% growth in the size of the Estates!
She welcomed the creation of the Sustainability Team at the end of 2023 to support the vast range of activities and accelerate carbon reduction efforts towards the Net Zero challenge.

Sustainability and Energy Officer: Amelia Iswariah
Amelia graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in Environmental Science in 2020, followed by a master’s degree in Climate Change and Environmental Policy in 2022. She began her sustainability career as a Sustainability Analyst at another higher education institution before joining the University of Roehampton in 2023.
In her role as Sustainability and Energy Officer, Amelia drives the university's efforts to create a greener campus. She shapes sustainability strategies and policies, supports team projects, and leads initiatives to reduce the estate's environmental impact. Her work includes analysing and reporting on our greenhouse gas emissions, promoting sustainable waste practices, and engaging staff and students through information campaigns and events.
Amelia recently ran a staff and student survey that has provided valuable insights into sustainability sentiment, priorities, and the effectiveness of communications and initiatives, shaping all strands of the university's sustainability efforts.
This winter (2024/25), Amelia is running a staff energy pledge initiative to encourage energy efficiency and saving, aiming to reduce energy consumption and foster a sense of responsibility.
Amelia collaborates closely with the university's catering and cleaning contractors to promote sustainable practices and improve efficiency. She also supports the Energy Manager with tasks such as managing solar PV energy generation and maintaining up-to-date Display Energy Certificates (DECs) and Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs).
