Ofsted rates our primary age courses as "Outstanding" (2023 report).

In 2023, Ofsted rated our primary-age teaching courses at Roehampton as "Outstanding" – and that includes every area they assessed.

The inspection, carried out by nine of His Majesty’s Inspectors and three Ofsted Inspectors, praised our courses for their overall effectiveness, quality of education and training, and leadership and management – all rated Outstanding.

If you’re considering training to teach at primary level, you’ll be joining a programme that’s nationally recognised for excellence and currently supports trainees just like you.

Modules

These are the modules we currently offer and may be subject to change.

Build great foundations for your development as a great teacher. Use your starting points alongside research and theory to develop an understanding of how children learn, including those for whom learning is challenging or may be vulnerable.

Build your subject knowledge in preparation for classroom practice so that you can knowledgeably, confidently and enthusiastically teach lessons and understand how the curriculum can be planned and assessed across the early years (EYFS) and key stages one and two.

Consolidate your foundations for understanding the structure and components of the primary curriculum. Be ready to knowledgeably, confidently and enthusiastically teach lessons and understand how the curriculum can be planned and assessed to support children’s learning across the 3-11 years. Promote children’s understanding, curiosity and enthusiasm for learning so that every pupil can fulfil their potential.

With a placement in school, support your progress towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2021). You’ll begin to apply the knowledge, skills and behaviours that define great teaching. Take the opportunity for immersion in professionally-focused learning with expert-supported guidance and feedback. Practice the strategies and skills you have refined and rehearsed during the first term-and-a-half of learning!

These are the modules we currently offer and may be subject to change.

Build on your understanding of how children learn, as well as the subject knowledge and school experience you have developed in the first year. Deepen your knowledge of theories which help teachers make evidence-informed and effective approaches to learning, as well as learning about research which considers holistic approaches to promoting achievement and progress, taking into account children’s earliest developmental experiences.

Develop your understanding of learning and teaching in the core curriculum subjects: English, mathematics and science. Learn about: oracy and the dialogic classroom and how inspiration for writing emerges from great books (English); multiplicative reasoning, early algebra and measure and geometry (mathematics); and physical processes, addressing misconceptions and effective adaptive practice to meet the needs of all children (science).

Understand more about the learning and teaching choices you can make to support pupils’ knowledge development. The focus is on active and experience-based learning to help children make secure connections between new knowledge and their understanding of the world. Through using objects, places and planned experiences to enrich children’s learning, you will promote curiosity and recognise their contributions to life in school and the wider community.

Continue to develop your teaching skills and expertise in the role of the sharing teacher. Re-immersion in the school environment will allow you to use the assessment, planning and teaching skills learnt through the taught curriculum to support the learning of the children in your placement class. Become more independent and make learning and teaching choices with the support of your class teacher mentor, Roehampton mentor and your tutors from the taught course.

These are the modules we currently offer and may be subject to change.

Refine both your subject knowledge and your teaching skills in a chosen subject in the curriculum, or in the early years foundation stage (EYFS). Develop specialist knowledge which will support you in your early career and as you begin to take on middle leadership responsibility in school. This may set you apart at interview making you highly employable. Share your own knowledge and expertise and conduct your own research in placement.

Focus on securing your curriculum knowledge in English, mathematics and science. You will draw confidently on your subject knowledge to make evidence-based decisions about assessing, planning and teaching English, mathematics and science in your final school experience and as an early career teacher.

Take further the knowledge and understanding and put this into practice, considering how the curriculum can allow you to work with children on important, contemporary issues. Complete a school-based project and compare and contrast the English national curriculum with curricula from other countries. See the impact of your choices in the assignment, creating an invaluable final learning experience on your journey to achieving QTS.

Consolidate your teaching skills and expertise by moving into the role of the lead teacher and taking primary responsibility for a class of children and their learning for a term, including sustaining an 80% teaching timetable for the final six weeks of the placement. Supported by your class teacher mentor and your Roehampton mentor, they will prepare you for your first teaching job and your early career induction.

Anthony Barlow

'Open Spaces, Open Minds' is my favourite Roehampton motto. We are an open-minded, diverse and welcoming community here and the university's campus and colleges support this. No two days are ever the same in education! Working with teachers, schools and students is all about making the educational experience and life-chances better for all children. They are the future, and we are tasked with helping them understand the world better. My research focuses on student and pupil understanding of where they live. What’s special about Lambeth? Hounslow? Ealing or Merton? Everywhere has a ‘story’, and I love tapping into this as it is about us, our community and the perspective we take as insiders or outsiders if we are new to London. I was new to London once as I came here to Uni. I taught KS2 in schools in London and in my hometown of Bolton, near Manchester. I'm a walker and cyclist and love a building, a park as well as a mountain or forest. I have too many books and still buy an old technology called CDs. I am heavily involved in our subject community and am Chair of the Early Years and Primary Committee of the Geographical Association. You can hear more about my passion for geography in this podcast here

Pablo Mayorga

Hi, I'm Pablo and I'm a senior lecturer in primary mathematics. I completed a PGCE in 2007 then worked as a class teacher in south London. During that time, I also had the opportunity to take on a number of other rewarding roles, such as CPD Leader, Gifted and Talented Coordinator, Year Group Leader, and mentor to NQTs and student-teachers. In my third year as a teacher, I started on a part-time MA in Mathematics Education at King’s College London, which reinforced my growing belief in the link between theory and practice. My favourite part of my job is supporting students to develop the key skills, knowledge, and confidence that they need in order to become great teachers. My research interests are children’s development of proportional reasoning and teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching.

Lynda Chinaka

Hi, I'm Lynda and I'm a senior lecturer in computing education at Roehampton. I have been teaching here for four years and my favourite thing about the university is working with a staff team that supports and prioritises the wellbeing and development of students. As a senior lecturer I enjoy meeting a variety of students who have made a life affirming, and in some cases, life altering decision to pursue a career in teaching. There is nothing more inspiring then to be part of that story.

I am interested in computing education in primary settings and building confidence in teaching all elements of the computing curriculum. Ensuring practice and pedagogy that intersects with the identities and experiences of all learners. Computing creativity for everyone!

How you’ll be assessed

You’ll be assessed through a range of real-world assignments designed to prepare you for life as a teacher. These assessments will help you build both your theoretical knowledge and your practical skills, while giving you valuable insight into the kind of work you’ll be doing in the classroom.

Throughout the course, you’ll complete essays, presentations, practical assessments, portfolios, lesson planning tasks and reflective activities. Each one is designed to help you grow as a confident and capable teaching professional.

By the time you graduate, you’ll have a strong understanding of both the academic foundations and the real-world applications of working with young children—ready to take the next step in your career.
