Dr Astrid Hauge Evans
My name is Astrid Hauge Evans and I am programme leader for the BSc Nutrition and Health programme. You will probably first meet me during Welcome Week, and then on the Professional and Academic Practice for Nutritionists module during 1st year. I also teach on modules for 2nd and 3rd students as well as our Clinical Nutrition MSc students. My research focuses on diabetes, in particular how we make the hormone insulin and how that can be affected by many factors in our lives, including what we eat! I really enjoy talking to students about links between science, health and nutrition and also about how they can develop their skills and professionalism to get the best experience when at university and afterwards.
Dr Sue Reeves
I am Registered Nutritionist and a Fellow of the Association for Nutrition, but I am also the Head of Teaching and Learning for the School of Life and Health Sciences at Roehampton. You will meet me in your first semester on the module the Principles of Human Nutrition and later in the module Nutrition of Population Groups. You might spot a couple of the books that I have co-authored on your reading lists, and in particular The Study Skills Handbook for Nutritionists and Dietitians that I wrote with Dr Yvonne Jeanes, is ideal for students who are just starting university. My research includes many aspects of diet and nutrition such as the role of diet in obesity, coeliac disease, and healthy and sustainable restaurants. I am also part of the international research team known as Toybox Malaysia that has been awarded many grants for projects to improve healthy behaviours among pre-schoolers and their families in Malaysia. I also am an advisor on degree programmes in Malaysia and Singapore, which is handy because I love travelling. My favourite things about Roehampton are my wonderful colleagues who are great fun to work with, and our students who are as passionate as we are about nutrition.
Patrick Brady
Hi! I am Patrick, a Senior Lecturer in Health Sciences. You’ll meet me in your first year on the Psychology and Sociology module, then in the second year, on Public Health and Research Methods which are interests of mine. I have lived and worked in many different countries with my most recent piece of fieldwork being on the Tuberculosis epidemic in Angola. I have also done work on malnutrition in Zimbabwe and worked and taught in Canada and the USA.
My interests are in public health, mental health, and research methods.
Dr Yvonne Jeanes
I'm a registered dietitian with clinical, teaching and research experience. I teach on our BSc Nutrition and Health programme and lead our MSc Clinical Nutrition programme. I enjoy engaging with our students, delving into the challenges of nutrition in practice and research. I am passionate about improving the lives of all who need to live gluten free; considering the nutritional adequacy and practicalities of living gluten free and the evolving healthcare provision for people with coeliac disease. This extends to my roles outside of the University where I am the Research and Policy Lead for the British Dietetic Association Gastroenterology Specialist Group, a member of the Coeliac UK’s Health Advisory Network and sit on the European Federation of the Associations of Dietitians (EFAD) Research and Evidence Based Practice Committee. I continue to find many areas of nutrition fascinating, I get excited by new and developing areas in nutrition and health, and am excited for the future of nutrition professionals.
Dr Olah Hakim
Hello, I'm Olah Hakim, a lecturer in Nutrition and Health. As you journey into your second year, I'll be your companion in the fascinating module of Physiology and Metabolism where we will explore how the human body utilizes fuels and adapts to complex conditions like obesity and starvation. Additionally, I teach on the Nutrition for Population Groups module, covering crucial nutritional stages from pregnancy to childhood. My research focuses on the intersection of obesity and diabetes, specifically the link between body fat distribution and diabetes risk.
