The Brand Identity module explores the strategic and creative processes involved in building, managing, and evolving a brand's identity. Students will examine the key elements that contribute to a brand’s visual, verbal, and emotional presence, including logo design, brand messaging, and tone of voice.

This module introduces students to the fundamental principles of graphic design, and digital imagery, while introducing concepts of typography, iconography, colour theory, and illustration It encourages students to explore and experiment with a wide range of practices and techniques, from the history of graphic design to applied digital image creation to layouts and communication design.

Dive into the magic of 3D creation and master industry-standard techniques. Learn the art of modelling, texturing, and rendering to design lifelike assets for games, films, and animations. Build your foundation for a career in visual storytelling with practical labs and a studio-style learning experience.

The Communications Challenge module focuses on developing students' ability to effectively communicate in diverse, high-pressure environments. Through practical exercises, case studies, and team-based projects, students will explore the principles of clear messaging, audience analysis, and strategic communication.

Whenever a consumer uses a digital device to perform any action, it leaves a trace and produces data of some kind. This module prepares students for an increasingly complex data-driven world both as consumers and as future media practitioners.

Design Theory introduces students to the foundational concepts, principles, and practices that underpin effective design across various disciplines. The course covers key design theories, historical movements, and the relationship between aesthetics, functionality, and user experience.

Dynamic Typography explores the creative and technical aspects of typography in motion. Focusing on the use of type in digital and interactive media, the course covers principles of type hierarchy, legibility, and the emotional impact of typography, providing students with the skills to create dynamic, visually compelling typographic compositions.

Content Marketing focuses on the strategic creation, distribution, and measurement of content designed to attract, engage, and retain target audiences. Students will explore key concepts such as storytelling, SEO, content strategy, and digital platforms, learning how to craft compelling content across blogs, social media, videos, and more.

This course offers all students the option of a one-year paid work placement, to boost your employability even further. If you choose this route, you will take the placement following year two of your course, and then return to complete your degree.

A placement year is the perfect opportunity to gain valuable work experience, to build on the career skills we will teach you on this degree. The connections you make on the placement will improve your career prospects further, and equip you with the skills you need to secure graduate-level employment.

How we support you

The University's Placement and Work Experience Team are experts at helping you to secure a placement. They will work closely with you from the start, helping you research potential employers, discover placement opportunities, create and pitch your CV, and will coach you to perform well in interviews. We aren't able to guarantee a placement, but our sector-leading advisors will give you the best possible chance of securing one.

We understand that your plans might change once you start your programme. If you decide not to do a placement, you will have the option of completing the three year version of your programme.

Whatever your choice, you will have access to many opportunities for work experience through our Placement and Work Experience Team, and access to face-to-face and 24/7 online careers support.

Design for Change is a professional practice module, that focuses on career advice and career support. Students are supported in preparing public facing online portfolios, and to actively consider their role as contributors to social change through digital design.   

Plan and lead creative projects from start to finish. Master project lifecycles, team collaboration, and budgeting while navigating real-world challenges in the creative industries. Equip yourself with tools and techniques to manage successful productions from idea to delivery.

Create a professional final project, research a topic in depth, or dive into your chosen industry with a placement. Gain hands-on experience, showcase your skills, and build connections that will launch your career in the creative industries.

Develop innovative projects, refine your creative identity, and build a professional portfolio. Through a combination of research, experimentation, and hands-on practice, you will tackle real-world briefs, showcase your work across platforms, and prepare for a dynamic career in the creative industries.

This course is offered as a degree with foundation year – a four-year programme which provides an additional foundation year at the beginning of the degree, that will give you academic and practical experience, as well as the skills you need to ensure you are equipped to successfully complete your chosen degree.

Skills

Our BA Graphic Design programme will give you the skills and knowledge to become a leader in visual communication.

Here’s what you’ll gain:

  • Design Fundamentals and Software Mastery: You’ll build a strong foundation in design principles, typography, and layout. Plus, you’ll become skilled in industry-standard software like Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Explore Various Design Areas: You’ll gain experience in different areas such as branding, user experience design, motion graphics, and data visualisation.
  • Critical Thinking & Communication: You’ll learn to analyse design challenges, create innovative solutions, and communicate your ideas effectively to clients and stakeholders.

Through hands-on projects and real-world collaborations, you’ll develop your creative voice and build a standout portfolio.

Learning

You’ll experience a mix of campus-based and online learning with interactive teaching methods designed for you.

Learn from design professionals and get hands-on experience with the latest software and tools used in the graphic design industry.

Your first year will build essential skills and knowledge through lectures and seminars. You’ll also use interactive online resources, quizzes, and student-led chat groups or blogs to deepen your understanding and stay engaged.

Assessment

Your assessments will use various methods to help you build and showcase your skills and knowledge.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • You'll work on projects and take assessments at the end of each module to apply what you've learned and demonstrate your understanding.
  • You'll focus on developing your ability to communicate in different ways—whether oral, written, audio, or visual—and learn how to use various technologies effectively.
